Sure do. a 2' leash, nylon. Usually when I have him on the 'long line' most of it's in my hand, about 2' loose which I try to keep loose on him, ie. not pulling. I could use the other as easily.

Drago and Erika recieved no corrections until they were at least six months old. don't want your child bit, keep the puppy away when unsupervised. The Alpha leader stuff is BS

I wouldnt suggest that Lee.
Can you expand on why not Steve? I know of several people who have done this and are exceptionally happy with great dogs. I'd be interested in hearing the potential down sides of programs like that.
For me, personnaly, and with my family, its our dog, we need to raise him. It has to be me,my house, my kids, us. Teaching sit, down, come,its all basic that I think any first time dog owner can learn to do, and its a waste paying somebody else for it. The puppy needs to learn to live with my family and can only do that with my family. You get him back from someone else, you still need to spend as much time applying what he came home with to where he is now, except that he's 4 or 6wks older.
The other side of that is how many times you see people write about the terrible experience they have doing that. I don't agree that there are so many trainers you can trust to send your dog away to.

Kristin;
Let's go in another direction while you try to collect yourself...
What does your husband do differently than you, which the dog seems to prefer?
You're getting some wonderful FREE advice. Maybe there's something to it.

I was thinking 5 feet or so, one end attached to your jeans or belt and the other to the puppy, to tether him to you.

Duane, I am listening to it, I know I seem resistant which is part of my own personal problem with frustration but I am listening.
My husband is a severely non-reactive person, LEO trained, no temper to speak of. The dog listens to him. As much as I would love to change my own reactivity (there's a whole other story there) I can't. At the same time, I do have to take of the dog as well. The obedience training and want for protection training is currently on hubby and I'm following his lead there.

Connie, I can pick one up this weekend - our Ex-Pen will be here by then as well which will give him a larger area to play in in the house and to be a dog with without being attached to me.

Now we're onto something. For the sake of the baby (puppy), you will have to even out. As someone suggested earlier, PUT THE DOG AWAY when either of you gets frustrated.

All of this....
Maybe a new thread, if desired, to continue that topic ....

Mentally prepare before you interact with the baby. Do everything you can to relieve the tension.
