this morning I took my Cody to petsmart at about 9:15 when there are hardly any people around. He pranced around like he owned the place. He stopped to look at one man and I fed him treats, and then got really happy when he saw a little girl. (He adores little girls) He did really well. We came home and practiced "place", he is beginnig to rush around and lay down between my feet. Practiced heel, down, touch, go touch, sit, wait, and the recall when we got home and the other dogs were still in their crates. Then I gave him a bath.
Tonight I am going to put a box in the living room and with each of them see what behaviors they offer when I click and treat. This should be interesting.
That's it for us today. Hot, muggy, 90 in the shade, cloudy and humid! yuk!!!!
OOPS Cody and I also worked on picking up the dumbbell in a sit position in front of me.
This afternoon before lunch I reviewed with bindi "visit" command. WHen I say visit, she puts her chin on my leg so she can be petted. I am beginning to teach the other dogs this too.
Ok, have a great evening. May the Lord bless your efforts at dog training.

To see what behaviors they offer that you might then capture (click and treat)?
That will be fun to read about!
I'm not so great at free shaping (versus luring), and I love to see or read about other people doing it.

Did some look and recall in the am. Really see the difference in reinforcement. 2 of our dogs we had for a year BEFORE we began understanding "actual" dog training. And so, they had about a year of recall being a "when I feel like it" kind of gig. Our newest has only been here a week or so, and already does better than our original pair. Bella has been with us for about 4-6 months (after we knew what we were doing) and has a recall so good that I could sprint around with food baiting here and mid sprint to me, she'll peel off and return to Mandy.
You can fix that tainted recall (with the two dogs who learned that it was optional).
I generally start over with a brand-new command when I work with a dog like this.
Sounds like you are doing great, BTW!

Dex was still energetic and the temperature still cool enough for bikejoring.
He was a bit rusty but did ok. half hour of fast and slow trot did him some good. Now he is happy to just sleep. He is back to normal for him.

Connie- I had thought of starting over, but NOT with a different word! that makes sense. I saw some people train recall on a whistle. Any thoughts on using a whistle for recall? I would probably use my lips to whistle, as I wouldn't want to need another piece of equipment. When recalling dogs (totally untrained dogs mind you) I have always whistled, in addition to calling commands they didn't know or respect. Don't want to start on a process that's less than ideal.
Today, we did weight pull as the AM activity. And I took Jax and Bella to Planet Dog to pick up some stuff. Did basic obedience, and had to manage Mabel past 2 dogs. All while defending/explaining pitbulls, and using anything other than clickers and treats. BRUTAL tough. But worked out well.

Well, I use the dog's name combined with my recall word because I have multiple dogs (and also work with other people's dogs when mine are sometimes present). (I do have a vibrating e-collar on a deaf one, and the vibration means to look at me, then I hand signal the recall. So still, each dog has his own recall.)
PS
A couple of reminders from the new Recall DVD:
a) Don't call your dog unless you have something, can make them come, or are sure they will come.
b) Have rewards whenever possible during teaching phase.
c) During the teaching phase, don't call your dog to put them up or call them away from something they like (unless you have something better and are sure they will come).
d) Control your distractions/competing motivators.
e) Practice recalls all the time!!!

Did some disc catching and tug...I reminded him what out means. We also did heeling and he was precise, did perfect right turns and everything.
Last night while walking he targeted a victim and I caught him the instant he started. All it took was a verbal correction. I noticed this guy was fighting with somebody, so his body language is what set Logan off.
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog. |

This is a proud moment, when a previously reactive dog can now focus on the owner.
Many of us here know just how much work went into that .... a ton.
