I asked my groomer, who has been grooming for 18 years, he is against the Furminator for any dogs other than short-haired such as Pit Bulls, Boxers, or Pugs.
I will only use a rake brush now on my Malinois. The Furminator actually PULLS out their coat. If you brush the same spot too much, it will rip out all the hair and be uneven.
I'm sure someone who makes money off of grooming your dog for you, would be opposed to you grooming your dog yourself.
I dunno, maybe the Mal coat is just really different than GSDs and Boxers, I've used it with no problems. My mother's groomer actually uses the Furminator.

Lets see... I was a groomer for probably 15 years (up until about 5 years ago) ....
I have 5 Malinois and multiple GSDs (don't forget the Corgis too) at any given time and I think it's the best grooming tool I have ever come across.
Ed and I select the products we sell here at Leerburg based on our experiences with them, and if what you say is true then we wouldn't sell them.
If you want to know the truth, you can do damage to a dogs coat with just about any tool, if you over do it or push down too hard (you can cause skin damage with a rake)
If you have personal experience with something and would like to post that, we welcome it. Posting something "someone" told you doesn't typically get a warm reception here.
Is a furminator a good choice for a very short haired dog? Mine sheds teeny-tiny hairs constantly, and I have been wondering what is the best grooming tool to try to eliminate some of the hair before it hits the floor...

I use it on True, Lynne. He is by no means a long-haired dog, but it does the trick. I use the smaller/shorter furminator.
There's also a thing called a Zoom Groom. I had my doubts about it but a groomer friend said it does a good job...and it does work. It's ideal for short-haired dogs and cats.
While I'd like to get a furminator eventually, I do have a Zoom Groom and love it. It works great on my lab/golden mix (medium coat) and my pit mix (short coat). The hair collects in the "teeth" and is easily knocked out in clump.
It doesn't work so well on my terrier mix. I think it may be because her coat is so coarse. Or maybe it's because she's harder to keep still.
