UK ban on cropping recent ??? I thought it's been disallowed in GB for MANY decades & that's why they breed such consistently NICE ears on Dobies over there...

No, from what I have read it's relatively recent. Definitely not decades. I can't say that w/100% certainty
. I will try to research it again to provide a definitive answer.

If show dogs can NOT be cropped, then breeders select for beautiful ears in their matings, which then become standard rather than the exception to the rule...

Breeding for nice ears hasn't really been a priority here. Unfortunately, Dobes are one of those breeds that has a lot of health concerns: hips/elbows, vwb, cardiomyopathy and until recently some temperament concerns. Health, structure and temperament have had to be the major focus, as it should be.

Come now, just because they breed for a beautiful drop ear in UK Dobies (or dark eyes, or scissors bite, or all other points of the standard) does NOT mean they pay any less attention to health & temperament than breeders do in the USA...

How is it then, that you haven't seen cropped doberman's before, even at shows?
I believe that of the many reasons you "should know more" about ear cropping and the procedure is because of the various sweeping statements you have made regarding the inhumanity of the procedure.
You cannot strongly advocate one position, while disregarding another altogether.
In answer to your question, I'd suggest that most Dobes in UK were uncropped even before the ban.
This I suspect, came about when the practice started to be 'exported' to UK.
Apart from that, I am not a great Dobe fan, so wouldn't have been particularly looking at/for them.
I think my 'statements' have been quite succinct and to the point, unlike those who have attempted to introduce irrelevancies, about spaying and docking, etc.
And I think most people are 'advocating one position'... I don't think you can fairly accuse me of ignoring the counter-arguments. I have just tried to answer them.
I guess it's partly my use of the word 'abuse' which got so many people going, so let me retract that and just say "causing unnecessary pain, for cosmetic purposes". I don't think I used 'inhumane', although these words all, IMO, mean much the same; it's just that some evoke a more violent reaction than others.

Roger,
Abusing a dog is not feeding it, hitting it, not giving it shelter, ect.. If you want to think the way you do there is no one that can change your mind but if you are all for "natural" what type of dog do you own?
