I hope it all goes well Tresa. I have used the "Comfy Cone" before and it works great. Just search for it on Amazon and you'll see it. It's basically the cone of shame but made out of a soft material that you can adjust to their size, bend, squish, etc. It even works good as a pillow for them to rest on.

Turns out the regular cone has been the best bet. I didn't know but he's too big for the bite not, he can still reach.
Logan was very bad. But I warned them that he would be bad...normally I make him let them examine him with no problem. But they had me leave him...most pets are better without their owners anyhow. He very dominant and if a person tries to make him do anything he doesn't want, he will discipline them. Everybody but me, is a subordinate by default. Even when not in pain, he doesn't wan to be bothered.
After I dropped him off, he laid quietly in the little room they had for him. I left the lead on him, so they could get him out. He came out was very good but wouldn't let the vet or anyone examine him. They couldn't muzzle him or do anything with him at all. The vet had to give him an injection and sedate him...I don't know how that was accomplished. The tech who told me this said it was very scarey. I'm not upset with them but I wish I did insist on staying. I feel more like its my fault because I knew he'd be awful.
Then after he started to wake up (they used Domitor btw) he took the collar thing off immediately and they had a leash through a crack in the door so they could pull him away from licking where his balls used to be. He tried to attack them through the glass door. They called me to come up there at that point.
When I got there they had left him alone and he had calmed down. When he saw me he was piteful and tried to get up. But as soon as he heard the tech's voice he was ready for her. So I took him to a room and sat int he floor with him while he woke up. They couldn't believe how sweet he was with me. She said "I can't believe this, he was so mean, we couldn't even get near him".
I hate that he went through all that stress. Its bad enough he got sick and had to be neutered. Well at least from now on, I get to stay with him.
Poor baby, he was in a lot of pain so I had to give him his tramadol earlier than recommended. I asked if it was ok and the main concern was him still be sedated, but he's not. He has a bottle of ace to keep him calm. I want to see how the tramadol does before I give that too.

Does he need to be calmed now that he's home?
How's he doing on the tramadol?
I'm so sorry this was awful. But think how awful the prostate swelling (and serious prostate disease) could be.

When he got home, he was not calmer but more awake, he whined and kept trying to get to the incision. I think it just hurt.
Its been about 45 minutes since I gave him the tramadol and he's laying very calm in his crate and has stopped trying to get at his incision. I think he is starting to feel better.
I know its just temporary, he'll be back to his usual self soon enough. In the long run its worth it.

Tresa, I am SOOO glad to hear that Logan is doing better!!
My Toni is a lot like Logan- she does NOT like strangers. When I took her in to get spayed, I stayed there while the pre-op sedative took effect, and my vet actually had me put her on the operating table. I stayed until she was completely out. When I went to pick her up that afternoon, she was licking the vet tech- you know she HAD to be stoned I am lucky to have the vet that I have, who understands that I know my dogs better than anyone and will allow me to stay for procedures like this.
For abdominal or hind end injuries, I've found that the only thing that will keep my dogs from chewing is the traditional cone. I have found one that is clear and flexible, though, so it's not as traumatic for them as a solid white one is.
Keep us updated on his progress- what a terrifying experience for you both.

Thanks Kelly. Yeah strangers are definitely not welcome to bother him. He is more accepting of other people in his pack messing with him than random other people.
Logan is very uncomfortable, he's on the max dose they said he could have of tramadol (75mg) and I gave him 1/2 a 25mg tab of ace. I may give him more ace tonight, just seeing how it goes. He just whines and whines...can't get comfortable. He will sit up in his crate, then lay down then sit up. I don't want to OD him, so I didn't give him more tramadol than that.
I know sometimes it takes more to initially kill pain unless you give it before they hurt. He was already miserable before I dosed him. The only thing that helps is for me to sit and pet him.

When Toni and Caterina were spayed, the vet and I decided to use Arnica Montana in addition to the Tramadol for pain- as Tramadol is not the strongest painkiller out there. This combination worked great for them. It may be something to discuss with your vet if his pain continues.

I may go by the health food store tomorrow and get that. Hopefully he's going to feel better tomorrow anyhow but Arnica is just something good to have on hand anyway.

I don't find Ace to be a good drug for pain. It can help to calm some dogs when given in addition to other medication. A nice thing about it is that you can see if Ace is on board by looking at the 3rd eyelid. Helps to titrate the dosing.
Also, lots of the desire to lick is from the hair -- like bikini line shaving, most unpleasant. Sometimes a cortizone cream on the scrotum (NOT ON THE INCISION) can be very helpful.
