Dumbbell work has progressed much faster than I anticipated. Once I worked the dowel a couple of times, she understood she had to hold it square and calm before I would mark. I put the dowel away and made her a dumbbell that is the same size as the OB1 but lighter.
She had struggled on the first attempt with a regulation dumbbell several nights ago, but she adjusted to this one right off. She took it and dropped it twice, but I gave her uh-uhs and she started holding it until I marked (quickly at first). We then did a couple of very short (3-5 ft) brrrings.
Five minutes later, she was getting calmer as she waited for the mark. She understands what is expected now, so we are ready to start practicing it. Once we get good at it, I'm gonna do a little opposition reflex work to solidify the hold and out.
I never thought of that (making a light dumbbell) .....

Brad;
You have no control over what you're faced with, so prepare as best you can for the worst.
Thanks Duane, I'm going to start working around new dogs and classes to see if any of these things put her off and then decide if she's ready. I really don't want to mess up, people already look down so much on Amstafs I would hate to make it worse! I was surprised at how bad the dogs were at the trial, heeling was very poor, only one dog didn't move on the stand for examination on lead even alot of the UD dogs were messing up, this made me more nervous as all I heard was how much better all their dogs were at training through the week so I REALLY want to get it right on the night!

Today is Bindi day. We went for a walk, and went into Petsmart and asked for some behaviors.
We came home and worked on fronts and finishes. She is still slighlty crooked on her fronts. Will be glad when I get a trainer who can help me. Going to sit in with two different trainers next week.
Will train Bindi tonight as well on her fronts and finishes. Hoping to get a video of her soon.
Sounds like everyone is doing great with their training.
sharon
Thanks for the encouragement.

did more nosework. I used birch, 4 hides. Harley was spot on, even on the high off the ground hide or the one under the trash bin.
I also put one in a fan (not working) and one in a hard to get corner of the tack room. There was a few clients in the barn and one horse on the cross tie but he was focus on the search.
We also did a lot of fun fetch. Winter is not here yet and I am freezing real badly.

Yesterday we took the new dumbbell work to the yard. Sadie retrieved it on the flat at about 10 meters, four reps. She was enthusiastic about it, and her presentation and holds were solid.

Today is Cody's day to go out and be walked. Since it is cooler I can take him out in the middle of the day. We will work on heel and come and getting into heel position, and possibly "place" command. Earlier I worked all the dogs on clicker training by petting them on the head and getting rewarded for it. bindi does not like her head petted, which I know is something dogs do not like to do, But in rally one day she will stand and the judge will pet her on her head, so working on it now.
Working bindi on fronts, finishes and getting into heel position from any place in the room. Also working on pivots, and heeling like glue to my leg.
Terra and I will be working on our heeling position using the mark, I think all of us are going to work on that today. Right after nap time.
Went to visit a rally o trainer, was interesting watching people handle their dogs. Have one more to visit on wed night and then the decision will be made for Bindi.
Keep up the good work, everyone have a wonderful thanksgiving. sharon and the pups

Last evening we did a short session on holding the dumbbell calmly, with some significant progress. We also did three retrieves on the flat. Dummbell work is going well, but I need to remember to stay calm, keep her calm, and not progress too fast. It's hard to go slow with Sadie because she's so enthusiastic about training.
This morning we tracked on a heavily baited serpentine. I need to work her back up to where we were two months ago, as, yet again, her amped food drive makes her frantic. She was working better with less bait on the track.

I am running out of ideas for places to hide my targets for Harley's nosework.
Tonight he was not challenged by in tall boots, under the recycling bin, in the tractor cup holder with an oily rag, in a grooming box and in the wash stall with all the shampoo and sponges.
He is also as good out in the yard.
Tomorrow is agility class

Worked my girl on stays while the other dogs were doing weaving around her, she didn't budge once not even when the trainer got the staffy she dislikes to drop right in front of her and sit right behind her I was very happy! Now just have to tidy the heeling up and she'll be all set for her trial

Agility!
Today a side from our report to hand that was less then perfect was very good for Harley.
It was that stupid handle that keep sending the dog to the wrong jump, getting mixed up in her feet, crashing into stuff, that would be me by the way.
I also place some hide for after class, one in side and 2 outside. Harley found all of them. In the shop it was queit funny. I could tell the he found it but 3' from the hide was those nice bully stick. So he would look hard at the target then try to grab a bully stick, then look hard and try to grab the stick. Finally he did indicated properly and got rewarded.
Now off to try one more horse.
