Well its Saturday 11/29. I started the rice and chicken meal Last Wednesday 11/26. So far she has not gotten sick. However looking over my journal, the pattern was:
11/15,16 - Sick
11/17,18,19,20 - NO
11/21,22,23 - Sick
11/24,25,26,27,28 -NO **Changed food on 11/26 to Chx n Rice
She seems to be doing better mood wise, but maybe its just my wishful thinking. Hard to tell...
Thanks for listening.
Susan and Mojo
Does "better mood" perhaps mean lessened discomfort?
Still no diarrhea, right?
I just want to say that the very small frequent meals should be continued. Increasing them too soon, particularly if this is/was pancreatitis, could easily undo all the good.
Please post back if there is any diarrhea, more vomiting, or lethargy (or signs of pain), because any of these would make me get to her vet (or an e-vet if necessary).
Keep us posted, OK? And keep her hydrated.
All JMO.

Today everything was going good. Gave her Pepcid and other med. She had her breakfast. She started getting antsy for her walk. (That's when she takes care of business) So off we went. It was raining. Walked about 5 minutes. She had diarrhea. Gooey, dark. Tried to see if there was blood but couldn't see actual red.
Yesterday and previous days were good poop. Actually yesterday she took a long time. Poop was very hard. Thought maybe from the rice. Sooo, ????

1. Is she drinking plenty of water?
2. No gagging or acting nauseated at all, right?
3. I would put in a call to the vet and also stick with the same diet because now she has had diarrhea.
If it was just constipation, I'd make the next snack-meal all poached skinless white-meat chicken (no rice) and then see the result of that. But it's not.
Diarrhea added to the vomiting does make me want to explain what has been happening to the vet, and keep her hydrated, and stay with the bland and efficient protein of skinless white poultry.
I would skip at least the next meal and give her gut a chance to calm down from the diarrhea.
Use baited water if need be to keep her drinking.
You are giving only snack-size meals, right? Still a half-cup? Tiny frequent meals are right.

Hi Connie.
She is drinking water.
No gagging and nausea.
I have been giving her 4 meals a day. 1/4 cup.
How do you bait water??
Also her vet won't be avail to Monday. I will certainly call unless you think I should make this an emergency call or see someone else? Also, just curious, but since my vet has done everything up to the ultra sound, what do you think can be done now. The scope thingy. I know at this time I will be giving her this new info about not getting sick since last Wed and changing her diet. I know your not a mind reader, but what else can be done? Just wondering what your thoughts are.
Thank You b

bile usually comes from an empty stomach. I would think that a GSD would likely need more than 1 cup total of chicken/rice a day. I would add in one or two more 1/4 cup meals with one being right before bed. Gooey and dark diarrhea is often a sign of an upper GI bleed. The blood gets partially digested as it travels along the GI tract so it kinda has the color of chocolate syrup when they eliminate.

The scope will probably give you some answers (and would show or rule out intestinal tumors). but if it is just too much to swing financially, I would want blood work run again at this point to see if it has changed since the last check and another xray or ultrasound to see if any changes since last time can be detected that way.

Ditto. I thought she was getting four one-half-cup meals a day, but Mara is right to say add more meals and make one just before bed.

For a dog not drinking enough: by poaching a piece of chicken or a little beef in it, then removing the meat and chilling the water until any fat is hardened on top, to scrape off. (But tepid is the best temp to give water to keep the dog hydrated.)

She is getting 4 1/2 cups a day. She was up playing with her ball and squeaky this morning before breakfast. She gobbled it down. I am anxious to see what her morning poop is like. Should I continue to omit rice?
