When he goes out to potty, do you take him? on leash? let him out in the back yard by himself?
If you start over from the beginning on potty training, you can name and reward what he is doing so that he knows the difference between "Hey, she takes me out plenty to potty and that is where I go." or "Hey, gotta poop and this room is convenience.".
That's why I think he is not housetrained and just happens to go potty outside when he is there and happens to go inside when he is there. Maybe he doesn't know the difference.
thanks for your thoughts on our situation. I appreciate all of you guys words. I usually just let him out in the yard. I do watch him though because one side of our fence is a little low and I know he can jump. So I just let him out and watch from the windwo and then call him in after I see him go.
the reason this is confusing to me is because I had him for over a year and he NEVER went to the bathroom in the house. NEVER. he would always let us know he had to go out by barking, or running to the door, barking, and dancing. Even when we would leave the house for a good amount of time he would never go in the house. When we would return home as soon as we walked into the door he would bark, run to the door and bark. He let us know he had to go. and he knows the difference because he won't do it when i'm home.NEVER.
what to figure ??!

It doesn't matter why. The only thing to do is re-train. I imagine that many of us have been through this, hitched up our big-girl/boy pants, and started over as if this was a new dog.
oh yeah, guys I have been reading online how lots of people put their dogs on the treadmill in the cold months. what are your opinions about that. We went out for a while outside and I did some fetch and tug with him focussing on his "leave-it" command. We both had fun, after i read about the treadmill i tested it out on Doser to see if he would like it. He really like it. I think this could be a good thing.
