Where did you see and read about people crating dogs, no exercise/potty breaks, for 15 hours? Please link us. This can't be allowed to stand unchallenged if it's on some forum.
Actually, no matter where it is.
I didn't see it, I know someone that does it.
ETA he's not crated, he's either loose or chained.
I don't understand, what are you saying? That everyone takes their dogs out more than twice?
Or that no one crates for that long?
There are more people than you think who let's dogs go without pottying for 10 hours, I've been told countless times that they have no problem holding it and it does seem that way.
When I take him out at night sometimes he doesn't go to potty right away.
But that's not the point. I didn't realize that I shouldn't do that. I definitely wasn't being malicious, I thought it was OK
ETA I posted before I saw your message. I understand. Again, I wasn't being malicious. I thought it was OK.
Natalie, this is your first dog, right? That's a wonderful and exciting experience to be going through, but it also can be confusing in this information age where anything and everything can be found on the Internet.
We were all in your position at one time, and we all went through the learning process and certainly made mistakes along the way.
That said, I beg you to please use compassion and common sense in deciding what you are going to do with your dog. Just because someone else does it or says it is okay does not make it so.
Your dog is completely dependent on you to make decisions and choices that are in his best interest. Kindness and consideration of his needs, both physical and mental, will go a long way toward ensuring he grows up to be a stable and happy dog.
Then I have no use for a crate. If he can't be in there the entire time I'm at work then I shouldn't've even bothered.
What do people that work do? I can't imagine everyone having dog sitters
What?
You have another able bodied adult in the house that WANTED a dog. You have her take the dog out and do something with him!!
It's not an "all or nothing" thing.
Also you have a teenage puppy, you do not have an adult dog. Even if an adult might be okay with that on occasion, a pup at that age is not.
What do I do? I take the dogs along to work and leave them in the car, I ask family members that live nearby to stop in and take the dogs out in the middle of the day. If it was going to be a regular occurrence that I'd be gone most every day for 11 hrs and no one was available, then I'd hire somebody to come take them out in the middle of the day. That's part of having a dog.
