I have been reviewing the first tape in the Bernhard Flinks series and I'm wondering about the purpose of a proper delivery for the prey item.
I understand the principle of the technique, and the do's and don't's of the drop; but, I've noticed that some of the dog's (especially Itor) lundge forward to bite the prey item (ball on a string) when it is dropped by the handler. I am wondering if this is a way of imprinting the strike on the helper sleeve, in the dog during beginning prey drive development?
I recall someone noting that Bernard's dogs are known for their fast, hard strikes. One of the things he teaches during drive building is that the dog has to go for the ball (prey item).
The saying was, "The rabbit doesn't jump into the dog's mouth." I took that to mean that you don't let the dog have the item, you just make it slightly less hard to snatch.
A common fault is to let the ball drop.
I lost a thumbnail figuring out the timing on that one. It grew back in about six months. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
