Is it ok to start crate training a 6 week old pup? I'v had her for 2 days. She already goes to the crate to sleep during the day. The problem is at night,I take her out to pee, when we come back inside I put her back in the crate and she cries for about a half hour, then falls to sleep. About 1 1/2 to 2 hrs. later, she cries again. I wait till she's quite for at least 30 seconds, then I take her outside again. Can a six week old puppie stay in the crate without peeing, for more than a couple of hours? I don't give her any food or water after 5.Please let me know if I'm doing the right thing.

6 weeks old??
Here's a good article covering all your questions:

Also, I think you want to take her out as often as you can at this age. If you can, take her out every hour....don't give her any reason for peeing inside her crate at all. I think a schedule is really beneficial, too. And taking her out after eating or drinking or playing, after a nap, and last thing at night -- all important.
My experience is with somewhat older dogs who had not had training or who had been in circumstances where they might have had some back-sliding, but I think the method (aside from your puppy's much smaller capacity to hold it) is the same.
Puppy people might have more to add.
P.S. Crate-training is the only way to house-train, IMO!

First, why do you have a six week old puppy?
Second, a six week old puppy cannot be expected to "hold it" for more that 2 hours. (Yes, that means getting up in the night and/or putting down newspaper in a larger crate/enclosure).
Third, waiting a half hour after the puppy quiets only stresses it, makes the crate an unpleasant place, and makes it more likely the pup will have an accident in the crate. Wait until the puppy is quiet (or if you are quick, a pause in between yammering), and immediately let it out.
Fourth, Ed has tons of info on the website on crate training and houstraining puppies. Check it out!
P.S. It seems to me that you are already crate training your pup.

Your pup should be going out about every 1 1/2 to 2 hrs right now. I believe the addage is 1 hour for every month old, give or take a bit. IMO 6 weeks is too early to take the pup, they are still learning tons of lifes lessons from mom and siblings at this time. I like to take them when they are about 9-12 weeks, they seem to adjust quicker.

In the past 3 weeks I have learned so much from this web site. I did buy the puppy dvd also.I don't know anything about the breeders of these puppies. They were giving away this litter of puppies because they are product of a brother and sister mating. We don't have the money to buy a "well breed" puppy so we decided to take one of these free pups. I want to care for her the best I can. I am willing to take her out as much as needed. Thank you for your help.

Shame on the breeder.
You got the Your Puppy DVD, you are going along on the crate-training schedule, you are asking questions and reading ----- good job!

Hi,I just wanted to let you know that my little guy is doing so well with crate training. We only have to get up once at night to let him out.He goes out at about 10:30, then around 1:30, then I get up for work about 5 in the morning and he goes again. He is only 7 weeks old so I am very happy about that. He does get lots of time out of the crate during the day. For two days now ,he has gone to the door and barked to go outside! I hope that continues!

on this subject, here's my experience. the crate training really works, plus, as of tonight, when i switched my pup from a plastic crate to a wire crate, he seems a little stressed ( i think about how "open" it is), so i'll cover it and see how we get along.
he's crying his "i gotta Pee" cry, so i'm outta here
