Last Tuesday, I had to take the girls to the vet to get their rabies shots. Before the appointment (which was early in the AM), I took them outside to run around for about an hour to get some energy out. It had snowed the night before, but only about 2". Well, they hadn't had anything to drink since the night before...I pick up the water at about 7, and didn't want to give them any before letting them run around.
Anyway, they started to eat the snow. They kept this up for about 15-20 minutes, I didn't really see any harm in it, but then I realized there was a lot of loose dirt under the snow and that they were eating it. They probably ingested quite a bit of dirt. By that night, they had diarrhea. The next morning they pooped out a lot of slime and poop and dirt. I expected it to clear up in a day or so, but it hasn't. They'll be ok again for a day, but then the next day they'll have diarrhea again. They aren't getting into anything else, except maybe a mouthful of snow (sans dirt) here and there. I haven't been feeding them a lot...usually if they get sick, I'll fast them for a day and it'll pass, but it didn't happen. I gave them some canned pumpkin and it helped for a day but then they were back to being sick again.
They are acting totally normal, not sick at all, but it's really nasty. It's mostly pudding poop, with some solid turds mixed in here and there. I feel like a freak describing this, but oh well.
Does anyone have any idea why they could still be sick? If they're still sick tomorrow I'm going to make a vet appointment (the vet is closed for the night), but the vet here is clueless and I don't trust him. Anyway, any ideas for why they are still sick or how to fix it would be much appreciated, by all of us!
Swettie it may just be a slight infection, or irritated bowel. If they are not getting worse i would not go to the vet and fill them up with meds just yet.Let the immune system deal with it for now and you may not see this issue again , let the dogs body cope with it on its own merit. You will know when it is time to go to the vet. GOOD LUCK p.s. ihave fed pupmkin to dogs for at least a week with no ill effects, if it is helping ,feed it its a darn sight cheaper than a OLE mean vet.
