My Dobe was cropped at 5 months! They suggest against this as the pup heals much faster when younger. You should consult your vet and know that the older the pup is, the less chance the ears may stand when they are cropped that late. One ear stands after being posted for two weeks, the other one doesn't so it will be posted for a good long while until after teething is all done.
the age really doesnt matter acutally lot of vets wont do it but with plenty of tapeing and messageing of the ears they will stand ive seen rescued dobies at 1 1/2 get cropped and still stand
Cat's right. I've been involved with Dobes for years and it's true that younger is better. Eight weeks is the optimum age. They heal much more quickly and it's much easier on the dog. If it's your breeder telling you 12 wks then they probably don't want to deal with the hassle and expense of cropping. IMHO it's the breeder's responsibility to do just that. It shouldn't be your worry. I would never even CONSIDER cropping an adult dog. At that point it's cruel. There is definetly the possibility that an older dog's ears could be made to stand, but it is MUCH more unlikely that they will. Though a dog cropped at 12 weeks should have a good chance of maintaining upright ears.
what's the purpose of cropping the ears anyway? i once talked to a german guy who was a veterinarian, and he loathed the practice. not saying he was a "german veterinarian" and therefore should be the ultimate authority on the subject, just saying he happened to be german..
dobes aren't my immediate favourite breed, but i think they look nice either way - i could take it or leave it. so i'm just curious as to where and why it's done?
Oh boy...do I not want to go into THIS topic again There is a thread or two on this topic from a month or so back that go into it at great detail. Basicly though it boils down to breed standard. It's no longer required in the US but it's still highly preferred.
I just had my 9 week old Dobe ears cropped last week and this is the 2cd Dobe and the vet told me it should be done at 8 wks. She didn't say why though.
