This past week our 6 month GSD has been doing a lot of gagging. This occurs anytime during the day (about 5-6 times a day) and seems to happen more after an activity period. It is sometimes, but not always accompanied by gray bile maybe about the size of a quarter - definitely not stomach contents - food is staying down. Her collar is not too tight, and in all other ways, she seems fine. Any ideas from you experts out there?
I'd head to the vet, may be as simple as something lodged in the back of her throat (shard of stick?). But better to have a vet check to see what's up.

I know a lot of young dogs go through hiccup spells during growth periods. The problem with getting a vet to diagnose this type of problem is that it NEVER happens in their office. LOL.
Sorry, forgot to answer this one. No, definitely not hiccups or sneezing. A gag is the best I can describe it..does comes with some breathing irregularity though.
You may want to check with your vet about kennel cough. A friend of mine had a pup that gagged and spit up phlegm about 2 weeks before the cough started and typically when it was active. Just a suggestion. Was still normal with eating and drinking and activity level...no fever, no lethargy, didn't seem ill in any other way....except the phlegm and moreso when active and then the cough started. Daily dosages of antibiotics and 2 weeks later she was fine.
So was my friends until the vet informed her that there are actually 40 variations of the KC...some bacterial and some viral and our current vaccinations only cover 13. Just something to rule out.
Anyways I hope it all works out for your pup! All the best! There's nothing worse than seeing a sick puppy except maybe not knowing what is causing it. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
It could be reverse sneezing. It almost sounds like they are sucking in with a kind of gagging, kind of like they can't get their breath. My dogs do this. But to be safe have the vet check it out.
Thank you all for your advise and help. Our vet found a slight bronchial problem, possibly caused by overbarking when at kennel. She's on antibiotics til Friday which should take care of it. It has already seemed to dissipate (number of occurances much less since we started the medication). Hopefully that will be it.
