I know this is not a Health issue, but didn't know where else to post. My pup Ultro vom Johnson-Haus will be 5 months old on Dec. 26th. He still has some puppy teeth left. But I'm very concerned about his one ear that the tip flops backwards. (see picture below) I don't know if I'm freaking out too soon or what, but it has been like that for at least a month now and I'm starting to freak out! I have never messed with his ears but could he have damaged it? I know it was up completely at around 10 weeks old. But the fact that it has been like that for so long now is worry some. Should I tape? If so, I have no idea how or what to use. Should I wait and see? Do you think it is damaged? When he puts his head down, the tip comes forward and the ear stays straight but as soon as he put his head up again, the tip flops backwards again. He is such a gorgeous dog that I would hate to see him stuck with the ear like that forever. Please help if you have any experiences.
Here is how it looks now and how its been for about a month: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v156/gsdbestk9/Mason/Mason063.jpg
Here he is at his breeder's at around 10 weeks old with that one ear completely up: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v156/gsdbestk9/Mason/Ultro2.jpg

Hi there,
This is normal. But you should still tape his ear. Everyone has different methods. I used masking tape on my Corgi's ears. I put my finger in the ear, wrapping it around my finger, then taping it. Some use something that is "tuff" like x-ray paper. You could possibly see if you Vet has scaps left over. Tape the ear to it. That works well. I'm sure you'll get advice from others. There should be other threads on this as well. Your boy is very handsome!

At 5 months your pup is still teething - teething has a direct effect on your pups ears - and in many cases will make an ear drop or both drop. This is perfectly natural and happened in both my gs pups. There are lots of threads and information on this subject and also an article by Ed. If both ears have been up previously - then you should have nothing to worry about. Like you i worried an lot about this and seemed like my pups ear was down forever. My advice be patient.
Regarding whether or not to tape the ear thats up to you - i didnt, floppy ears in gs's are rare. Give your dog some time - he is after all still a devoloping puppy.
Carolina,So many people tape..glue..etc the ears.My feeling is that this is their choice but frankly..I wouldn't want my ears taped would you??The teething process is a hard one for a pup.It absolutely can affect the ears along with some other things. Make sure he has some things to naw on..to help him through.Ice cubes are great..if he will take to them.Use them in playing. You can also just rub his ears..to increase blood flow and he will like the attention as well..Don't worry so much.
My pups ears were up before teething, then fell. One came back up but the other one took forever. It gradually started up but the tip would flop over. You think your nervous, this ear didn't come up until he was 8 months. They are now perfect. (I tried taping. That was a real fun experience.) My advice, try not to stress about it too much. Believe me, I know how you feel. But at 5 months and ears up before teething everything will be ok.
I also used ice cubes for teething and he loved them. Still use them now as treats.
Relax,
Bob
