Heather,
In all honesty, since it sounds like you may be a novice pet owner, I would search around for a reliable and reputable trainer to help you.
If in fact this dog acts as aggressively towards you and your family as you say, it is a set up for disaster.
There are many ways to explain to you how to do this, but without seeing the dog and her attitude, it may be a recipe that might get you bit. Therefore, I think that is why people, including myself, are not even attempting explanation.
Where do you live? This might help us to direct you to someone that can help you through this.
I would start to utilize the crate more and control everything the dog does....ie...potty, play, feeding ect....
I do not think any of us are trying to be difficult, just concerned about your situation.
A prong may cause further aggression issues especially if the correction is not delivered at the proper time that it is needed, therefore, you may possibly cause the dog to come up the lead at you for an unfair (or what the dog thinks is unfair) correction.
Trust me, I have had it happen more than once and it is not something you want to deal with.
Until The Tale of the Lioness is told, the Story will Always Glorfy the Hunter
That really depends on the dog. I can't imagine a 6 month old golden being that bad that he would need a whole lot, but who knows? For aggression in adults I would always go with a nylon choker. In a 6 month old puppy I'd maybe look for an alternative way to get thru to the dog. Finding a local trainer is the best bet, but stay away from that petsmart crap.
Oh no it's not too late, he's still just a puppy. It just sounds like toy posessiveness n sometimes puppies just aren't naturally the perfect fit for the owners, it would have come out eventually no matter what you did. Its the trainers job to make the dog fit the owner Not saying at all that you are in the wrong, but we all have our limitations of what we can/want to deal with.
