I was hopeing someone could point me in the right direction for a book about bloodlines and breeding? From what i have seen on these boards dog bloodlines are almost like royal blood lines :-D. I am not looking to breed anytime soon (think years here) but i would just like to sort of see what its all about and try and understand whats going on when people are talking on the board :-D
I think a very good book to start with is The German Shepherd Dog: A Genetic History by Malcolm Willis. He's a British geneticist & GSD breeder. I think he's also a judge. Even though his main focus is on the show lines, the chapters on genetics, eg., of genetic defects in the breed or on behaviour, are still very much applicable to working lines.
I have never seen a good book on breeding - if I had we would sell it. I respectfully disagree with your comment on Willis - the UK has never bred decent decent GSD's so why would a book on genetics from the UK hold water?
Fair enough, but at least he could check it out of the library to familiarize himself with the terms. Are there no books or anything on working line GSD's similar to the SV system of breed surverys? How is a breeder or prospective owner able to make informed choices if they don't have personal knowledge of the dogs or lines involved?

25 years ago I wondered the same thing - why is there no decent written information?
Bottom line is there is no written material on working bloodlines because this is such a subjective topic. One mans opinion is another mans fact - bottom line is the SV is not the final word either - the SV is only a step ahead of the AKC on screwing up the breed - they dont stress working ability - one only has to go watch a Seiger Show to confirm this.
I have personally watched the slow decline of the working ability over the past 30 years. This is a sad situation.
There are valid reasons why Helmut Riaser is at war with the SV and wants to start a new working dog organization.
Michael ,it's not that hard. For me it was a breeze.I feel the less you interfere the better.IF you ever need help feel free to e-mail me anytime.I'll be happy to help with any questions you have
I started to buy the book by Willis but since it is so expensive I decided to check the forum to see if I could find any inofrmation on it. I am glad I did, maybe I saved some money.
