After starting the raw food diet, my dog started to get a little dandruff. Is this a normal part of the detox process or may he be allergic to something? If it may be allergies, how long should I keep feeding him the raw food to make sure it it isn't detox?
We even had hotspots on one of ours when we started BARF -- Springer Spaniel -- she blow most of her coat (and this is a breed that does not blow coat) and it was about 6 weeks. I am glad we kept up. The new coat was the best ever.
Dandruff -- could it be coincidental with the time of year and you are just keying in to it as you are looking for changes? Heat in house dries out the coat.
What are you feeding for BARF and are you adding fish oils or fish (not much)
We are feeding chicken wings, ground beef or turkey, a mix of vegetables (carrots, broccolli, spinach, sweet potato, celery), Missing Link food supplement, and a supplement that contains various oils.
My dog is allergic to egg and when he ate that in the past, he would get dandruff, pimples, and would smell really bad. He has some dandruff now, however, he does not smell bad nor does he have pimples.
I never thought about the change in weather, though I don't remember this happening last year. I will keep it in mind.
Another PTC -- my dog cannot tolerate Missing Link probably due to the brewers yeast (I assume because brewers yeast on the side caused problems) ....there are a lot of things in it and some dogs cannot take it.
SO far I am looking for the ultimate BARF supplement (since we feed liver twice a week, I do not want to add vitamin A but do want more E & C, as well as minerals than you usually see in dog supplements -- until then, I just buy the kelp and the vitamins and grind them up and add to veggie mush.
But I would give it time -- mine would always go digging at the base of his tail when an allergy came by so I knew it.....not sure dandruff = allergy but guess it could

I've been feeding Nupro's vitamin supplament with joint support. It has a broad range of vitamins, minerals, and other standard ingredients. I feed it as an extra with my BARF diet.
