feeding her 2.5 cups a day and mixing raw in with it..just seems like alot of food considering HK reccomends she be fed 2 cups a day? I guess the question I have is the HK food can be fed alone or does it need to be fed with raw? Also what exactly is the ratio for feeding all raw I ave heard anywhere from 5-10 % of her body weight and then I heard 2-5 % of her projected adult weight? this all seems kind of confusing and Im not sure which direction to take this....I read both boos and they both seem to have differing opinions..any real world advice would be appreciated.
Yes, HK is designed to be fed alone. You may supplement, but are not required to do so. As for feeding amount, go with 2.5-3% for normally active dogs. Adjust as needed (such as, more for puppies, more for very active dogs, less for sedentary dogs, etc). Keep checking your dogs ribs. You should be able to easily feel but NOT SEE them.
Actually, it depends on which formula. Preference is NOT to be fed alone. Embark or Force may be fed alone, as well as Verve, but I stick w/the grain-free formulas. I always add raw to it so it's not so soupy, plus, THEY NEED BONES! And, it's cheaper! THK doesn't go so far w/big dogs.
my question is would it be wise to start my pup using thrive instead of embark? the shop that sells THK suggested embark but thrive is cheaper AND is for dogs with sensitive stomachs..???
Clarify by spelling every little thing out. Some people can be extreme when drawing their own conclusions.
when i read the hk website they claim both are formulated for puppies? I guess I will try mixing them for variety...hopefully after my wedding I will be able to switch her over to all raw and no dehydrated
Collin-I would stick w/Embark, esp. for a pup. No grains, and higher protein than Force, although I don't think that difference is so crucial if you are adding RMBs to the food.
Marty-You could do that, but be cautious mixing a whole bunch of different foods in case you later need to do an elimination diet if allergies crop up. Having said that, my experience w/healthy, raw-fed dogs who are not over-vaccinated is that the allergy risk is pretty low if you're just using THK and raw. JMO.
