How are chicken legs for the Barf diet? I was reading that wings are good because of the ratio of meat to bone. It seems that on chicken legs that there would be to much meat compared to bone is this true?
I HAVE ALWAYS FED MY GSD CHICKEN QUARTERS B/C THE WEIGHT BEARING BONES ARE GOOD FOR THEM. THE DENSER BONES HAVE MARROW (WINGS DON'T), PLUS THEY BUILD JAW STRENGTH, AND CLEANS TEETH. I GIVE MY CAT THE WINGS, BUT THAT IS B/C HE ALREADY RIPS US TO SHREDS WITH HIS JAWS AND DO NOT TRY TO ENCOURAGE GREATER JAW STRENGTH IN A DEVIL REINCARNATE <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
correct me if I am way off base but I hve been told that chicken legs are dangerous for dogs to eat because of the chiking hazard. Or does that only apply to the cooked legs??? I would like to know because I'm trying to pu together a menu for a raw diet.
In adition to daily yogurt, a couple of raw eggs w/shell, and puried veggies 3 times a week, leg quarters are what my terriers get exclusive of any other meat/bones. They've done quite well on them. Amazing to see a 14lb dog destroy a whole, large leg quarter. Same diet for my GSD, but he gets a whole chicken w/giblets occasionally.
My mainstay for my dogs are necks, turkey and chicken. they are a fraction of the cost of wings, and are the proper balance. I do feed quarters with the rib portion and organ meat attached once a week or so, but if I get a haul of quarters on sale, and am going to be feeding it a little more often, I will strip some of the meat off the bone, and feed that way.
