i have a 11 year old Field Lab, who is not current with all his shots.
I have a new GSD pup arriving late January. Do i need to get my field Lab current
with all shots before this pup arrives
any advice would be great
thanks
James, welcome to the forum. If it were my dog, I would not vaccinate him. You might want to do some research on vaccines before you vaccinate either your dog or your puppy. I will never vaccinate another puppy or dog again EVER.
My pup had a trembling of his right leg after he was given his 2nd vaccination (and may I say absolutely LAST vaccination). I had asked the vet for parvo and distemper only, he completely ignored me and gave the 5 set series. I saw it was the 5 in 1 only after I got home, called the vet, he proceeded to ridicule me for "not knowing what I was talking about" and refused to acknowledge that the trembling was caused by the vaccine.

Even if you don't go 100% no-vaccinations, James, any minimal vaccine protocol* would consider your 11-year-old dog to be done forever with anything but what you must do to satisfy local rabies laws.
I imagine that he had puppy shots and probably some subsequent "boosters." As Dr. Dodds says, you cannot make him MORE immune.
I agree that you will want to read up before you take your new pup to the vet, and listen carefully to what Sandy said about being ridiculed by her vet, her express instructions ignored.
You will see that there are only three vaccines on her list. Period. And you will want to read these two columns carefully: "Re-Administration Interval" and "Comments."

P.S. Having done a ton of reading in the last year, I would consider the Dr. Dodds protocol to be the absolute most I would ever consider giving to any dog I acquired as a puppy, IF I decided to go with any vaccinations at all.
I have all adults, and I never allow any boosters. There is nothing I can do about what happened to them as pups, but I can protect them from further damage, as you can with your senior guy.
