I've used THK, he does love it. It is not easy to find here, and I forgot about getting it Leerburg which would be the easier way to go. Sorry, what do you mean by baited water?
Are there foods I shouldn't give him at his age? I do have a food processor that I could pulverize everything in.
Chicken backs are lovely for chewability.
Leerburg ships THK even faster and charges a little less on the shipping than the actual THK site. (I keep it on hand for travel and for out-of-meat emergencies.)
If you go the THK route, which I really think would be great for him, you can make the food soupy if you like, giving him even more fluids.

I can second this in a big way. I switched a dog at 9 years old and it was like he was a different dog. MUCH more energy, the colos in his coat became much more brilliant, and no more doggie smell.
Whenever I adopt a "new" dog, no matter how senior, s/he is switched gradually (over a few days) to raw.
My strong opinion is that it's the best boost I can give them to stay healthy as long as possible. And DEFINITELY happy!
I have one who is probably 8 or so who vibrates with happiness while the food is being prepared. Well, they all do, but when this guy came he was a smelly dog with yeast and pruritis and only mild interest in food.

Leerburg also sells this Ice Pups and this is a great thing for "baiting" water as well. Or if you freeze them into ice cubes as recommended, the dog will get more fluids that way as well.

Thanks for asking about senior dog diets. My wife, and I guess me too, have been reluctant about doing anything different in our senior's (12 yr. old dalmatian) diet. This thread and the responses to it helped bump us over the edge. Tonight she had THK and her first raw chicken breast.
Even though it has nothing to do with your question, thanks for bringing up the senior diet.
Well, I went to dog class last night and stopped by the butcher shop and ordered the chicken backs. I had to buy 46#, but I got it for $.69 a pound- ground. He thought I was a bit nuts, and asked what I was doing, so I told him. He said they had tried with their 12 yr old yorkie that started having horrible allergies, but it didn't help, then it got killed by a neighbor's dog. Maybe it was more than allergies. He has a customer that does ground beef for her dog, but otherwise it sounds like it's only me. It was a really big step, he'll have it ready in less than a week. Now to figure out how much for each dog and the rest of the diet, I can start to panic soon. Thanks all, I just wanted to check in, and I'm going to need a lot more help. Got to run, just wanted to say "I did it!"
