Sasha never was trained to weight pull the picture of her on the sledge empty was the first time she was ever hooked up. I had actually expected her to pull more as she is a beast on the scooter I'm 265lbs and she will go for like 45 minutes at a 30kmh + gallop in the bush pulling me. But I guess she is so used to being back tied for grip entry at French Ring once she felt the tension on the sledge she wasn't exactly sure what to do. She had to be coaxed and cheered on to get a move on.
That being said all dogs want to pull ... thats why the prong collar was invented right? All you really do is give back to the dog what it always wanted to do in the first place. I understand that the IWPA even has weight pull classes for toy breeds!!
As for it being cold it really wasn't, it was about 27-28f or so just below freezing. Very pleasant weather! There was little wind as well. FWIW all I had on was a T-Shirt and thin Fall Fleece Jacket. My mitts and hat stayed in my pocket. There is a real danger of overheating yourself and then getting wet with sweat then that is where the danger could lie if the wind picks up. All my years working in construction, the keys to keeping warm was having good boots, mitts and headgear. Anything else was null if you didn't have those 3 ingredients.
Just a quick note as well about a weight pull on snow vs being done on wheels ..
Ingrid's Dog 'Poe' pilled 2400lbs on wheels there is always a big weight difference between snow and wheeled in meaning that wheeled pulls the total weight is always higher than the same dog on snow.
