Hi, I joined Leerburg a few yrs ao when I adopted a Long hair German shepherd from a rescue. He was a major handful and was much younger than we realized. Thank God we had experience with bonehead shepherds, plus the advice and DVD's from this site helped! He is doing GREAT now! Our other GSD passed away this summer and I was ready to get another rescue in the 2-3 yr old range. However, when I was looking on the Internet I came across a 9 yr old female Mal and French Ring II trained needing a home to retire to. So our family went to meet her and we adopted her! She is trained in French, and our other dog in German...oh well! Her name is Pharrar (Fa-rar), and she has to be the most affectionate dog I have ever had! She does not act or move like she is 9 yrs old, and she is bossing aroung our other dog (Skylar)! They get along great!
Pharrar is a sight to behold when she heels, etc! When we watch K-9 Cops and she hears those dogs bark at a bad guy she gets very excited, she wants to "play' too! I sometimes wonder if she misses French Ring. Do any of you have retired Ring dogs, and if so, what do you do as far as working them once retired?? Here is her "web page", http://www.pawsnclaws.us/Pharrar_ped.htm
I have always wanted a Mal, and adopting Pharrar has worked out so well. I know she is already 9 yrs old, but I will enjoy her for as long as I can!
I think it is wonderful of you to adopt a retired dog.
I don't have a French Ring dog, but she's retired from agility and obedience competition. I'd guess you'd do whatever is fun for you and your dogs...hiking, walking, playing, as much exercise as she needs and enjoys, etc.
Thanks Leih. I am really enjoying Pharrar! When I stop petting her she moves her head under my hand for more! Of course she will stop doing that if I tell her, but she looks at me with those eyes and I want to keep petting her!
I thought it was cute when she took my sock to carry around, until she puked it back up...all rolled up in one piece! YIKES! No more socks for her! She will tear tennis balls, so yesterday I bought her a Kong, and she loves it thank goodness!
