I'm curious also. I got a 60# box of free pork bellies from the butcher. What percent of the diet can it be? Out of a 3-4# meal, is it okay to add 1/2# of the pork? and we'll say wanna-be athletes
They have been cleaning out their freezer, checking dates and some freezer burn on some things. So, my freezers are very, very full. Got the pork bellies free, and some discounted chicken, beef liver, and pork roasts. I buy a lot of meat thru them, so it is nice to get a little bonus once in a while. Makes me happy, makes them happy, makes my dogs very happy.
Every dog is most certainly different, but just to throw it out there - my dog is extremely sensitive to pork fat above all else. I'm conservative about pork meat in general because of it, but if I fed him a really fatty piece of pig we'd be making a trip outside every 15 minutes! The moral there would just be to start slow and make sure you know your dog's tolerance to not just fat, but specific types of fat, in order to avoid any... unpleasantries...
Wahoo for such a score at the butcher's though!
My butcher does a workshop series every 6 months that includes breaking down a whole hog - they're kind enough to save the heads for me!
I will give my dogs as much raw fat as they want as long as their poop stays firm.
However, my glutton/vacuum dog (she must be related to a snake as she never chews her food, just swallows it whole) is always strictly rationed.
