Lucy had a fecal done at an outside lab and she is very positive for giardia. I would say "Crap" but that would be in bad taste.
So, she is going to be on Metronidazole. I pick it up tomorrow with instructions. I have googled everywhere and all I can find is you can't treat your yard. I don't care if I have to kill my lawn, I can't stand the thought of this thing being under our feet.
Anyone go through lawn care with this bug?

Wow... that's kinda shitty.
I wish I had some advice, but I can't say as I've ever had this problem.
Antibacterial wash on the paws when both dogs come in from the yard may be a start. So they don't lay down and like their paws.

Jo,
Sorry that you are having to go through this.
I just had that happen to one of my dogs, however, both had to be treated with the same stuff as you are on.
I too was worried about the yard. I would take the hose and wash as much of it into the lawn as I could.
I asked my vet about it, but he told me not to worry about it,
so I didn't. I have not had an reoccurrance at all and that was a while ago.
I did read that the spore could survive if it was a sustained wetness for over a month. I think at the time, I was worried about me washing it down into the ground, but like I said,
no reoccurrence.
Maybe someone else has some more or better advice to give you.
I hope your guy/girl will get better soon!

thanks Joyce. I heard if I just pick up and keep her out of the yard pooping, we should be okay. I also found out that it is almost a certainty she will be a carrier. The little boogers are almost impossible to clear out of the system.
I am going to start her on probiotics and MSM. One study showed MSM to be somewhat effective against allowing the boogers to nestle in the intestines. can't hurt.

That is interesting about the MSM. I had wondered how mine had gotten Giardia. But we live and walk by a creek walk way every day.
Plus they play in a football field that is right next to the creek.
Lots of people let their dogs go swimming in the creek,(which I do not allow) and there are coyotes all around the area. I just suspect that they got it from being in that area.
I actually give mine the probiotics nearly every day, plus yogurt, but I think my dogs are showing many signs of allergies, so I give it to boost their immune system.
I am really interested in how much MSM are you giving and how often, as well as are you using the powder form or pill, and how Lucy is taking it.
Anyhow, I hope Lucy gets better fast. Oh and sorry about my previous post, as I was in a hurry and neglected to acknowledge
Lucy as I said good luck with your "guy/girl"
I was not very observant!

Dosage for MSM (from what I can gather) is 500mg per 10 lbs of weight (broken into 3 x a day if possible). I would choose the powder over the pill (preference) if I could find Vita-Flex. If not, I will go to natural food store and buy it from there. I do know it is bitter, so mixing the powder in food is a challenge.
She gets MSM (400MG) which is included in her Phycox so I just have to do the numbers and go from there.
I think the reason she hasn't gotten worse (or actually got better--she did have diarrhea) is because of the MSM in the Phycox. won't know for sure because I won't try her without her supplement (for joints).
I will keep track of how much, how she takes it, poop patrol and follow up fecal in a couple of months and let you know how she is doing.

Could you put the MSM powder in those gel capsules from the health food store? That way you could have the loose powder without the bitter taste?
I was thinking of doing that with DE instead of sprinkling it on their food since Yote is such a picky eater. He has tapeworms, which means they probably all have tapeworms

Hadn't thought of that...hmmmm...I am willing to consider it for Lucy, but Hambone scratches and itches whenever he eats a gelcap. So, I figure I could use the MSM on him also but find a different way of getting it into him...sardines maybe.
and poor poor Yote. Tapeworms...
I didn't know you could feed DE. There must be a food grade?

I would never have thought of gelcaps causing itching, I wonder what it is he is allergic to in them.
