I have a one year old female GSD, who is usually very well behaved. I have one problem with her. Every time I walk out the door with my other dog, she barks & carries on to the point that she's driving the neighbors crazy. This is a huge problem if I have to leave her inside by herself at night. She will bark for a long time, sometimes until I come back inside with the other dog.
Any suggestions as to how I can put an end to this? We've tried just leaving her alone until she stops. I hoped she would quit this on her own, but I've had her for 10 months and it isn't any better. I appreciate any advice you guys may have.
I have one that does the same,. it seems to be a jeoulsy issue, last night after i took her "neighbour" out for a walk she set to telling me off and then telling her neighbour off also (they are friends).
What i have used a couple of times with success is filling a kong with bits and peices of yummies so that she feels like she gets something special when left behind (there is one other neighbour, 3 in all) when i remember it, it does work in keeping her quiet while im out, but i still get told off when i get back with the other dog.
Its better than the neighbours thinking that im strangling the dog <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
I when mine refuse to shut up I introduce them to the bark collar. It works till the batteries run out, the dog will tell you when. I put it on only when out in the yard w/o me. My one barked out of fear she'd bark at her shadow or a sheet on the neighbours line.Anyway, it would help.
Do you crate the dog while you are gone? Or is it a case where she sees you leaving?
The kong bribe works well on some dogs. If you have the luxury of an extra room away from your entry way I would place the crate there. If your dog knows that crying in the crate does no good then it should be quiet. Just as an added incentive to be hushed do the kong thing a couple of times.
This can be both good and bad. My Giant was crated in her "room" with the door closed when my ex-roomate moved out. One of my friends that was helping her move asked me where Sacha was that day... it seems she never barked once while they loaded a u-haul full of 2 rooms worth of stuff. If I leave her loose in the "dog room" she will look out the window and bark, but if she is in her crate she is quiet.
She is crated when I take the other dog out. Even if she doesn't see us leaving, she always hears us, and as soon as my key turns in the lock, she starts barking. She only does this when I take the other dog. If I leave by myself, she doesn't make a sound, but if I take the other dog, all hell breaks loose. I haven't tried a kong, but I've tried throwing her treats or something to eat before we leave, and she still barks.
Yeah, try the recipies that come with the kong... Kibble and peanut butter... kibble and cheese whiz.. I doubt she will care much if you do that... My kids hardly know I am in the room when I make them.
If that doesn't work you will probably need to get an anti-bark collar. Make sure you don't get one of the watch dog models... They allow 3 barks before a stimulation. I have a friend that has a dog that learned bark 3 times, wait, bark three times, wait.... Very annoying.
