I have a six month old female GSD and a two year old male GSD. We have a problem with our little girl getting way to excited and crazy around the male. It is complete chaos if they are let out of their crates to go outside together. She has this loud yelping barking scream that just sounds awful. Our neighbors probably think we are beating her from the way she sounds. He is excited to get out and romps around a little, too. But she is doing this because she wants to play, chase or whatever with him. She chases until she catches him and grabs onto the fur on his cheeks and he ends up dragging her around. When we try to separate her from him she just runs away.
When we let him outside without her she also has a fit of loud and aggressive barking and pounding against her crate. When she is around Deacon, Luna completely 100% ignores us. When she is completely away from him, she is pretty good for a six month old, especially if she has had a healthy dose of excercise. Deacon listens and will come when called, very well actually, despite the dog hanging on to him. We have also tried keeping her on leash and correcting her but I have injured my shoulder giving her corrections. They don't phase her at all. Honestly, I have also used a spray bottle of water when she is barking after him. That tends to work some. Any advice???
When you raise a puppy with other dog(s) they become "doggy" - in other words, your female pup is bonding with your other dog and not with you.
Advice: read the articles and the many threads on here about the exact same situation. This is a common issue.
It boils down to keeping the dogs separated most of the time until the pup has bonded with her HUMAN family. Since she is already six months old, you might have a bit of work to do. Additionally, puppies should always be on leash. You have taught her that she can run around in the yard and does not have to listen to you. quote: "When she is around Deacon, Luna completely 100% ignores us." You have taught her she can do this by not controlling her.
LOL, I said it was a common issue, not common sense. If it were common sense, this board (and others) would not be filled with questions about doggy dogs.
Thanks guys. To answer the one who wondered how long we've had them. Deacon since he was 9 weeks and Luna since she was 10 weeks. I think some of the problem is that she was also with her parents in the back yard of her breeder until she was 10 weeks old. These dogs weren't "family" dogs. I think the owner just liked having GSDs. She was the last to go and so got lots of time with her parents and not the humans. All she knew were dogs and few people. But I do also agree that they should be separated. I have the pack structure dvd and am about a third through it. We also have two others. Ed is a genius and I totally get his ideas. Except its harder when they are your own. Thanks again.
