One of our neighbors has a box turtle that they want to adopt out. They are not really taking care of him at this point, he just hangs out in this small patch of dirt in their backyard and they toss him greens. I feel bad for him! But I'm not sure how big of a commit it would be to take him in.
We had a desert tortoise years ago that we fostered for a few years, but I know that is a lot different than the needs of a box turtle. I've been researching it online and there is are a million different opinions about what they do need. If any of you have experience with them, I would love to know what is necessary for their housing - we have a backyard that is completely brick-walled in, a lawn and a patio. I also want to know if I'm going to have to buy bugs or if he'll find what he needs in the yard - don't really love bugs! It's one of those situations that I know he'd be better off with us, but I don't need a lot more work!
I have had Box turtles and Chinese Wood turtles. I don’t know if you plan on keeping him in a terrarium in your yard or letting him freely roam. You mentioned your yard is enclosed by brick, they are great diggers, so I am not sure if he could dig under.
If you have bugs in your yard, slugs ,crickets, worms, and your yard hasn't been treated with chemicals, he should be able to collect his own. Keeping a check on the humidity would be my biggest concern.
Think a "a plant that walks". I think they can be a real interesting addition to your yard, fun to watch, and they can live a long time. Your dog will eat the turtle poo, which could potentially be problematic if the turtle has parasites or salmonella, but if it seems healthy I guess I wouldn't worry too much. I have had turtles and think they are pretty cool.
