How are you finding your ACD pup to be re: intelligence, drive, courage etc. I'd think this temperament is PPD type material, though I really know nothing about it. I'd be interested in your comments.
My own poorly bred one is fearful and suspicious, but I bet Ingrid's dogs are lionhearted.
What about dogs that are social in some areas like at the vets when the vet showers them with treats
But mean as hell around their yard or in their home
Aloof on walks or on hikes etc..
I find a lot of dogs are social depending on with who and for what reasons and will refuse to look at and go up to people for at other times. Like Someone can give that dog a piece of meat and give it a pet in a pet store. But if that same person goes near its crate or fence the dog can turn aggressive.
Steve, for a "real world guard dog" you would never allow the vet or anyone outside the family to give treats or pet the dog. That includes the vet.
If you want the dog reward for being good at the vet then YOU reward it.
At the vets, all that is required is that the dog is under your control to allow the vet to examine/treat it.
"Around the yard", "in the crate or fence" are situations of barrier aggression. It has nothing to do with being a good or bad guard dog.
