ok quick question, our 18 month old male border collie/lab mix will dribble urine when he is walked past a post/bush/store isle that he wants to mark but isnt allowed to stop and lift his leg on. He will literally just let it out without lifting his leg or pausing because he knows he is not allowed to. Should we treat this just as if he was lifting his leg?
My dog is like that in a pet store where another person has let their dog pee...he doesn't dribble but I would treat it the same. When I see him start to sniff or position its walk real fast so they can't. ideally have some treats too and make sure he has a chance to get all his pee out before going in.
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog.
work on something formal and reward (not dribbling) and eye contact....
marking is something I've always had zero tolerance for and I try to nip it in the butt before there's any issue making sure my dog is "to busy" to mark. Ryuk marked once inside and never did it again (I admit, I was mean....very mean, but he did know better and I wanted to make it clear that whatever satisfaction he got marking was not worth it....ever). With Gambit it's all been just making sure he's always paying attention to me, we practiced in an outside area that I knew hundred of dogs pee all over daily, I trust him 95% in stores at this point with a little less super vision, but he's still watched.
I also let them pee before hand and will reward long peeing (not marking pee) to encourage them to empty their bladders before going anywhere (also useful before long car rides).
he isnt allowed to sniff corners or even pause at them for this reason, but he will still dribble literally while hes walking by it, not even paused for a fraction of a second. He once dribbled when some other dogs passed us in the park. He will go over to the other dogs and displays some dog aggression or at least a desire to dominate them and we have been working on correcting this behavior and keeping him engaged while around other dogs. So when he does this he IS making eye contact or walking briskly by it but he does occasionally till try to leave his mark while walking, haha.
So y'all advise is to just keep working on engagement and see if starts to fade away?
on a humorous note, while working engagement in Petco their trainer saw my dog engaged with me and told me my dog was begging! Ive never thought of it that way but I suppose it is similar, except begging has a bad connotation
So you're saying that he's engaged and one part of his brain is peeing? LOL I guess if you keep working on this or use a higher value reward, he'll eventually be using all his brain engaged into your game with him. Just make sure he pees all his pee before too. Could you do restrained recalls down the pee post aisles? That way he's wizzing by the stuff and not wizzing?
