I have a 3 yr old Belgian Malinois with very strong nerves. NOTHING that I have encountered scares or "overly" excites him (except his ball). I have had him a little over a month and have only heard him bark 2 times. I'm trying to teach him to bark on command, with no success. I've tried all the conventional ways including bringing my other dog in to bark on command and then praising her. Anyone have some suggestions to try? I've never had a dog that didn't bark at something.
Can you be more specific? Is the dog back-tied, or otherwise being frustrated when you're trying to get him to bark? Sometimes you can start by rewarding a whine...
I can get him to whine a little and I've praised him for every little sound he makes. I have not tied him. The best results I've gotten were playing ball with him. I'd get him to whine before I'd throw it. However, he will give me nothing more. The previous owner also tried to get him to bark on command, again, with no luck. Do you suggest back-tieing him? If so, can you give me a little description of that scenario?
Tying the dog can build frustration or put him behind a fence. If you tie him, use a harness so he's not getting corrected by lunging on the collar (some dogs it doesn't matter, my dog will lunge against anything I think).
does he like a tug? If so you can get him in high drive for the tug, have somebody hold him and reward any improvements with a bite...the person helping just lets him reach it.
Another way it to tease him with yummy food until he barks mark it and give the food (if he knows markers) That's how I taught Sport my chow-mix to bark....later on taught her to growl wich was hard, she was a very soft submissive dog, didn't want to growl at me.
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog.
Do you use marker training method? If you do, then you can reward progressively stronger attempts at barking, starting with a whine or a sneeze all the way up to a bark.
If you do not use marker method, you will have to wait for a full bark and then reward.
