Thanks Bob, I think I just need to pay attention and know when to quit. Its totally a heat/pain issue, when I first start out from a short distance and tell him to get it...he comes charging as usual but when he hits it and I spin around pulling Gs he slips off. In cooler weather, that never happens. After a few tries he gets crazy from frustration and will hang on...then he gets too hot and slips again. So, I'll stop before that and/or start out easy at first and just reward him for gripping better.
Anne, btw both tugs I got from LB, one is the red thin tug and one is the sm 2 handle tug. Normal stuff.
Connie, I haven't been giving him recreational bones until rarely lately (only a few times before), too expensive. There's got to be something making his teeth like this.
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog.
When you first start out make the dog miss a time or two. That builds frustration and frustration builds drive!
Just know that to many misses with no success and the dog's drive will fade faster then old paint.
"I might even go to a rolled towel in hot weather, he loves that more than anything".
That makes it even more important that you can read the dog and stop before the dog is exhausted.
That "loves more then anything" can get you in trouble. The dog's drive for that item could keep it going beyond it's endurance level in the heat.
Nothing wrong with the towel. You just have to be more alert!
