I have been feeding raw beef fat trimmings .. human grade beef steak and fat trimmings from a food store for some time now along with raw chicken quarters. My dogs are doing great and I don't mind that they are putting on a little weight as we have had a cold wet winter. Their coats are very thick and shiney as would be expected. Has anyone else had experience with long term feeding of beef fat (some lean as well in the trimmings) as an energy source. Essentially the fat is the primary energy source for the dogs. The more I feed raw the less I believe that vets have a clue about dog nutrition.
Some dogs get pancreatitis from too much fat in the diet. But fat is a good energy source.
Watch that the trimmings aren't too icky, sometimes trimmings are the moldy outside of a hanging carcass and could have bacterial contamination which could lead to some wicked diarrhea.
I'm with Betty...that's a lot of fat. GSDs are very prone to pancreatitis.
That sounds like a high amount of fat vs protein in a meal. Especially if you are feeding the chicken Qtrs with all the fat & skin. As these tend to have a higher fat ratio to them as opposed to backs or necks. Also the meat itself (dark meat) has a higher fate ratio.
Is that the only foods that your dogs get? No additional protein variety? If so, I would consider adding some more protein sources, also.

I'd like to see a diet closer to what the Leerburg raw diet looks like.
In addition to the points made above:
Healthy dogs do well with raw fat ..... but the proportion of that raw fat should be similar to the proportion in the prey animals they would eat on their own.
Fat has twice as many calories as, for example, protein. It's the only macronutrient with more calories (basically, a calorie is a unit of energy) than the others (excluding alcohol, not really part of this topic).
That means that out-of-proportion fat can easily crowd out the protein, for example, required by the body to build and repair muscle (and other tissue, including skin, blood, etc.).
A growing puppy being fed a diet that doesn't provide the right calcium and protein is in big trouble. But an adult dog too has certain requirements that would be crowded out of the diet by a lot of extra fat calories.
A balanced diet (balanced over time; not necessarily every meal) doesn't leave much room for lots of extra fat.
They are GSD dogs that are Czech/DDR/Dutch breeding lines. Most are solid black or bicolors. Many of my dogs have Orry (IT) in their bloodline as a major part of their parentage so they are stout and square dogs with deep chests. Working line dogs outside with covered and rainproof shelters but free access to the outdoors so they are wet and muddy even sometimes as they play rain, snow, or shine. They look great and feel great despite a harder than normal NC winter. I will reduce the fat in combination with the chicken quarters as the weather warms or cools. Weight control is so far the primary issue that I see.
