Not sure how to delete a post. After a few minutes many of my questions were answered by a Will FAQ post on protection dogs. So since I can't seem to delete this let me ask this question.
If I want a dog to be a natural family protector without officially being a PPD dog is this possible while keeping the dog as general homestead dog who can behave with livestock under supervision. Obviously the dog would be raised as a puppy with animals.
My assumption is prey drive equals aggression or at least leads to chasing livestock and defense drive leads to protection of estate.
Can I have prey drive for play and fetch and still not have the dog go after animals (with training)
The "natural" family protector is just that. Natural!
Rare and hard to find in today's world but many dogs, correctly chosen, could do a nice job with training.
A dog with a good threat display is good enough in 90% of situations.
In any case if a person seriously feels the need for a protection dog then a firearm and proper training with the firearm would be mandatory in my books.
The high prey dog can easily be trained to not chase live stock by simply never allowing it from the get go with plenty of exposure and training as a pup.
I agree Bob. I do own guns to include a home defense shotgun and I am a conceal carry weapon holder and carry daily including my own home. It is a complete system I am looking for. THe dog helps alert to things I can't hear or see...advanced notice.
I am eying and talking with a breeder and will find an appropriate forum to post regarding if anyone knows them or the lines.
I will look for Ed's video regarding the horses too.
