I'm pretty much to the point where I won't feed food that is advertised nationally. Smaller, regional brands seem to give a lot more bang for your buck. Re: one company going after another - BB really flaunted the "no by product meal like those national brands" thing in their advertisements. I'm not really surprised that one of those "national brands" investigated and called them on it.
This morning on local news, the subject of dog food was discussed with a veterinarian. Her advice was that, although most people would like to feed top shelf foods to their dogs, not everyone can. Her best advice, according to her, was to select the best food that fits in your price point. Having gone through the process of making that determination myself many times over the years (and most recently, two-three years ago), I think that is excellent advice.
It's great advice. Tanner eats the Costco grain free that only manages to get 3 stars from dogfoodadvisor.com. I would like to feed him "better" but would there really be a point to it? He's happy, healthy, and hasn't had a single ear infection on it. He rarely has gas and his poop is nearly odor-less. I'm happy with it.
On PetSmart's Authority brand he had a greasy coat, frequent severe ear infections, gas that could clear the room, and big poops that you could smell from across the yard.
