My Malinois puppy had the same problem. I have fed a raw diet for 5 years and never had this problem before so I contacted Lew Olson at http://www.b-naturals.com
She has a PHD in natural health and the solution for my puppy was to add probiotic powder to my pups food and stick to one food (i.e.chicken backs)for several weeks until she had normal stools.
After the puppy is doing well on one item then slowly add more variety and use the probiotic powder with every meal.
Hope this helps.
I know this is an old post but hopefully no one gets too upset for bringing it up again. First I am wondering what ever happened with this situation? Did things even out.
I have fed BARF to my dogs in the past. I was convinced by my hubby to put our new pup on a natural kibble. Well, 3 weeks later we still had pudding stools which are a pain in the butt when you have a 2 year old playing in the backyard, he knows to stay away from regular poo but he can't make the connection to pudding stool and it is hard to find it all immediately, if we leave the pup alone in the yard for an while. I decided to try switching to all natural to help this.
I have followed Ed's menu plan. And have been sticking to just chicken, wings and ground meat.
It has only been a few days but the poos are even worse. Projectile poo is more like it, extremely runny, with chunks of bone in it.
I ordered Probiotics so hopefully they arrive soon, but have been adding ACV to help in the interim.
All you really experienced BARFers, should I stick with it for a couple of weeks? Like I said I have BARFed dogs in the past, but they were old and didn't have any problems at all. Poor pup had an accident in the house this morning and needless to say, since I am pregnant, the smell cleaning it up was enough to make me throw up.
Kandi,
It is really hard to say what was causing the initial course of the runs, switching when the pup was already stressed probably wasnt a good idea. When was the pup last wormed? Has the pup had and recent vaccinations? At this point I would not go back to the kibble, but I would try adding plain canned pumpkin (a couple spoonfulls) and possibly even cooking the pups chicken for a few days(remove any bones) to try and get the runs under control. I wouldn't switch back to the kibble now, just because I think it will only make things worse at this point.
I hope it gets better for your sake, last thing we need is the two of you barfing...
I am not sure that stress was the reason for the pudding poo. He was on a natural food that I have heard can sometimes be too rich for pups and cause pudding. But he has been on a "natural" kibble since weaning. Or probably I am misunderstanding when you say stress?
He was last wormed on Nov. 1 and his only vaccines were on Oct. 24. I was planning to vaccinate him again after Thanksgiving per Dr. Dodds recommendations. Now of course I will not stress his system with those until I see improvements on the stool issue.
I have been in contact with Lew Olson at B Naturals that Cindy recommended in a previous post and she suggested a couple of probiotics and also an immune booster before his next vaccines.
Question though, previously when I had my dog on all natural, I used pumpkin if he got bound up to loosen him up and it worked great. Does it have the reverse affect if they are already loose?
He had his chicken wings (beaten well with a mallet )this morning at 7 and so far no poo at all. But he is acting completely normal. And he is very eager to eat.
These are all new problems for me to be sure as my previous BARF fed dog had no troubles.
I don't have any intention of switching back to kibble this soon though. I am determined to try and solve this issue.

Yeah... I didn't mean he was "stressed" just that the pudding poo was already stressing the system a bit. When they are having the runs it causes a big chain reaction of imbalances to occour.
Pumpkin is the great digestive equalizer... if it is too hard, it will soften it, if it is too soft it will firm it up. I always have some on hand. Another thing you may be able to get locally (I don't know where you live) is Wysong makes a probiotic powder that a lot of health food stores sell. Make sure you get the one for the raw meat though if you can find it, they make one for kibble as well. I looked at my local hippy... opps, I mean Health food store today and they stocked it. If not, you can buy acidophilus(sp) in the refridgerated section as well. If you know your order is coming soon the pumpkin will probably do the trick.
Other homeopathic things that may help are slippery elm and marshmellow root. Unfortunately I don't have the amounts that you would give a pup on hand, maybe someone else here would know.
I would try the pumpkin and resort to cooking the meat as a last stop. You already know the benefits of raw. Make sure this kid is getting plenty of fresh water too. Hope it gets better soon.

As for a follow up w/ my pups situation, I now feed him anything at all and he's fine. I did feed the kibble for a little while until I got the diarreah under control, but eventually went back to the barf. When I started the barf again I added probiotics to the food and that made a big difference. NOw I'm in the process of filling my freezer w/ lots of white tailed deer bones. My dogs love the stuff, and it's hunting season here in NY state, so there's plenty of deer to be had.I truly do agree w/ Czechgsd that his immature system needed help, because he's fine now.I also think the junk food that his breeder had him on made it more difficult for his system to handle the raw at first, but as I was told would happen, he is now eating like a hog at any chance he gets and is diarreah free!!
No one ever said life was supposed to be easy, life is what you make of it!!
Thanks for updating me Jeanette. Good to know he eventually was able to handle it.
Deanna, thanks for all your help. I do feel better about the situation, just voicing my woes. I am running to the store to get some pumpkin tonight. I will see how soon my order will be here. Our small town has the smallest health store in the world but I might check it out if my order is taking a while.
He has pooed again and it is a little less watery so that is a good thing. It still has more bone pieces in it than I would like, but I will keep crunching them up for him and let his little system learn to cope.
Seems weird to be typing about poo so much but it really is a great indicator.
