And in an effort to not take this thread too far off the track, back to the subject of food. Do you recommend still supplementing food with vitamin E with salmon oil if the food already has vitamin E added to it? I guess it can't hurt.
I do, because supplementing with fish oil (or other oils) up the need for E.
This is an old thread hopefully someone responds. I started using HK for my GSD pup because the person who is my mentor for raw said unless you can feed tail to nose, then a puppy should go on dog food. I have been using the Keen and bought a box of the Preference (not because anyone has allergies but just because I can add raw meat). For supplements, the dogs get Vit E, salmon oil, colostrum and a vitamin recommended by the breeder.
I like the HK dog food but I do add alot of RMBs for teething etc.
Keeping in mind the muscle meat to bone ratio when adding to an already prepared balanced food.....best follow the directions to adding to HK listed on the box, if you are not already.
Also be sure to use the HK formula(s) that is listed as being for all life stages when feeding as the base food for a puppy. They all are not.
Also be careful adding additional vitamins to an already balanced formula. The exception would be the V e for the salmon oil. Older dogs can better tolerate some variations in diets...pups need pretty much exact balanced diets. You are feeding for future health of bone, muscle, nerves teeth etc in a pup.
Thank you Anne. This is our first time using HK for a dog. How long have you been using it?
The puppy is purposely being kept on adult food as recommended by vet and breeder to support a large breed puppy. The vet is very happy with the pup's weight and overall health.
Many years..pretty much since it came on the market outside of California..
. But I usually use it as an add on or sauce over raw food or as part of the meal not as a base food....unless I forget to take food out of the freezer. I have fed a homemade raw diet for almost 12 years....feeding 1 adult GSD & 3 GSD pups on it.
Since I don't feed any grains...I use the zeal, love & occasionally embark. My dogs get chicken & turkey & duck daily....So I want the HK to provide another meat source. They also get pork & beef weekly with lamb, goat & buffalo a few times a month.
I do like that the HK variety can provide a different protein source.
I had my pit bull on raw for 3 years. Loved it. I raise my own chickens so everyone gets chickens and eggs. Beef comes from a local farm. Lamb comes from another local farm. I throw a serving of fish in there 1x per week, organs 2 x per week, tripe 1x per week. And whatever else I can acquire on my merry travels. I do try to toss a veggie or two in during the week...just make a bit more of whatever the people are having. Try to make sure one is a sweet potatoe. And I do give a scoop of oatmeal or brown rice cooked with bone broth on occasion.
Yes, raw is all I feed. I give tripe, veggies, organs muscle meats & RMBs daily. Also yougert daily. Eggs.fish several times a week.
Again I caution about adding to a balanced meal for a pup. Salmon oil & E the exception.
