If Innova is a good commercial food, and I think it is, and if raw feeding is so good for dogs, why couldn't I occasionally feed my 4 mo. old GSD raw chicken wings or things like that? I am away for many of his feeding times, and my wife "will not" feed him raw...She is afraid he will get choked or something. I would like him to have at least "some" raw food. Can I not suppliment the Innove with chicken? At 4 mo., he is about 38 lbs. Is that too thin. I read that I was suppose to keep him a little lean, but it didn't say how lean....Thanks for the help...John
I have always fed my dog a mixture of kibble with stuff added such as frozen tripe, canned tuna, mackerel & corned beef etc.
The pet food manufacturers do claim that mixing both upsets the nutritional balance of the food but I think thats a load of baloney. In any case my dog won't eat kibble on it's own. It is said that raw food and processed food are digested at a different rate but I have never had a problem feeding my GSD in this way.
My dog is 41/2 years old - nice and lean and very fit.
He weighed much the same as yours at that age. My dog is of W German ancestry - it very much depends on your dog's lineage. A good test is whether or not the ribs are too prominent - you should be able to see them but not play the piano on them if you get my drift.
I would say just feed your dog the way that is comfortable for you and your family. Too much weight too soon is the worst thing possible for our GSD's.
John, you can feed raw and kibble, but it is best that you don't feed them both at the same time. The foods gwen mentioned supplementing, aside from the tripe are all cooked foods and can be fed right along with kibble. If you want to feed some raw you can feed either raw one day and kibble the next or raw one meal and kibble the next. I am doing both right now for my pup and he is doing well with it. Kibble takes longer to digest, so I feed that as his night meal. If I woke up tomorrow and didn't have any raw to feed he could eat kibble and not die.
I mix kibble and pork or chicken wings for my dogs
they seem to really enjoy this. And they have a pretty healthy coat, what I have to do because of this softer diet, is supply this to chew on like kongs and Nyola bones. I also brush their teeth some times. Along with feeding just kibble to clean their teeth. Mixing kibble with natural food with kibbles defeats the cleansing nature of the kibble.
