Question regarding automatic sit footwork. When coming to a halt during heeling, are you stopping on your right foot and bringing up your left, or vice versa? AND, if your dog really knows finding the left, does it matter? TIA

If your dog is consistent then it's half the battle.
Being consistent with your foot work is the other half.
If your dog is consistent then I suspect your pretty consistent with your foot work.
I stop on my right then bring the left foot up.
In starting the heeling I always start off with my left foot.
When I leave the dog for a stay then I always start off on my right.
This all helps the dog in being consistent in finding and staying with the left leg.

I might add that when I was starting out I did a lot of "heeling" without the dog.
No sense in having to worry about your own walking while worrying if your dog is correct.
Get your foot work down solid!
That became much more important when I got into Schutzhund because it's up to the handler to know the WHOLE tracking, heeling and protection routines.
The judge does little to no prompting or giving directions other then a nod for you to start the next part of the routine.
The Schutzhund routine covers most of a soccer/football field compared to a 40'x40' AKC ring where the judge gives you every single command.

I was taught to plant the right and then bring up the left. Done the opposite way your dog has very little warning that you're stopping and ends up ahead. By planting the right first the dog can read enough body language to realize you are stopping and get themselves aligned for a nice straight sit in the right position. Done the opposite way the dog often ends up trying to hurry into the sit and forging a little bit as they are prepared to take the next stride, not stop.

Many thanks. That is what I thought having first learned the AKC heeling. But now I am hearing a school of thought for dogs that tend to forge, to start off on the right, still bringing up the left as you come to halt. Very confusing.

People try all sort of finagling to save points. It really comes down to just training the dog to do the behavior right in the first place.
