I've owned half a dozen different terrier breeds over the years and taken a couple of them to high levels in obedience.
I've never understood the "terriers are stubborn" thing and believe it all boils down to consistency in your training and understanding "that" particular dog.
The breeder of both my Border terriers has put most every imagined title on many of her Borders.
Both my daughters have Chi dogs and each also have small mixed breed small dogs.
None are competition trained but all are very responsive to their owners.
The lady I most admire in the competition dog training world when I started getting serious has taken a rescued Pug, a rescued Sharpei to their OTCH titles in AKC obedience in addition to many OTCH Dalmations.....and still doing it.
I belong to a fairly large all-breed obedience club that offers a variety of activities such as obedience, agility, rally, flyball, nosework, tracking, etc. Though I cannot think of any Chihuahuas off the top of my head, I know members who train and compete (successfully!) with a variety of small breeds such as Papillons, Dachshunds, Toy Poodles, Bichon Frises, Miniature Pinschers, Pomeranians, numerous small terrier breeds, and others I'm sure I'm forgetting.
All this is to say that I believe your Chi-mix can learn to engage with you and become a well-trained, well-mannered household companion and family dog, or can also go on to many different dog sports or activities if that is your desire. All it takes is the willingness on your part to learn how to train your dog, along with big doses of patience, determination, and consistency. And that goes for any breed or size dog!
