It is not necessary to wait until a dog is done teething. The drive work can be started at 8 weeks, the prey item (ball, tug or rag) can be jerked out of the pups mouth when the handle feels the pup is not giving it enough attention. If you go to the video you will see that I explain that this builds frustration. The goal of jerking the prey away is to build a stronger grip - we hope the pup learns that if it does not hold the prey with a firmer grip it will loose it.
In the video I explain that jerking the ball away needs to stop when the pup starts to teeth - jerking away during teething causes pain and this would diminsh drive not build drive.
There are plenty of things that can be done during this period that are not hurting the dog.
Once teething is done the handler can go back to working on grip again.
So the bottom line here is that you should not wait until teething is done, you should just stop the grip work during teething
