The whole audio is about 6 minutes long, most of the subject is not about the dog but rather the gun aspect. The dog aspect however is interesting, the dog gave the woman enough time to retreive the gun. I wonder what percentage of Labs would act in such a manner.
I just listened to that audio. That was great and to think the Lab bit him twice! That's awesome. As a Police Officer & hearing that, the Offender still went after her, though hard to say if the dog would have gone to the location where she was and engaged again, it's still a remarkable story. Both the lady and the dog were heroic. I've seen on several occassions where Labs have protected their family. Labs are a loyal breed and though each dog is different, I think that if a dog is loyal and loves it's family, it will protect. Though I'm surprised this man chose this victim/house seeing that there was a dog, most criminals will skip any victim/house that has a dog. Maybe he didn't know or simply didn't care.
“Ordinary” dogs can do some amazing things……Back when I worked in the suburbs of Philadelphia we assisted a neighboring jurisdiction with the search for an abduction suspect. The bad guy observed a “tot finder” sticker on the victim’s house at about 4 am. when he was walking in a residential neighborhood and climbed into the 4 year old girl’s window. He picked her up and carried her down the stairs he started to open the front door when the family’s Rhodesian Ridgeback attacked this guy and started to tear him up. He dropped the little girl who started crying. Mom and Dad woke up, called 911 and all that needed to be done to find the guy was follow the blood trail. That dog had no protection training whatsoever and had never shown any aggressive behavior before.
Rhodesians are no "ordinary" dogs <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> , I saw that case on TV, that dog was no young pup either. Definately a grey beard.

My geriatric Lab (a useless, to everyone but me) house pet sounds absolutely ferocious when anyone comes to my house. Would he bite? I don't know, he does have teeth, but then he has already served a purpose by letting me know someone is there. The rest I can handle if need be.
