I just got a 10 month old male GSD, he is about 85lbs, and roughly 27" at the shoulders. He is a little lean with a huge male head and alot of bone. He is fairly laid back. His nerves look very solid as nothing seems to make him the least bit nervous, loud noises, fireworks, shotgun blasts, no real responses other than some curiosity. He has attached himself to my 5 yr old daughter and insists on going everywhere with her, to the point of clearing a 5 ft fence in order to stay with her. He is not overly affectionate, but just insists on being with her. I am happy with this. I am curious as to when I should start some obedience with him, like I said he is new to the household and am curious as to how long of an adjustment period does one allow a dog of this age?

Just to clarify here, I have not had the opportunity to view the pedigree of this dog, the dog was given to me by another military member that was transfering overseas. Therefore I am not sure as to what type of GSD this is yet. What I can say is that his bones, teeth/bite, and head look excellent, his nerves appear pretty solid, he is not lifting his leg yet. He is heeling well on the leash, and understands sit and down. He is a little too curious about other dogs though. I posted in this section because I figured that it probably covered him.

You can go ahead and start motivational obedience anytime. You probably want to start seperating him from your daughter as well, unless you want to come home to who knows what destruction once she starts going to school

Thanks for the info. Have started to separate them a little. He has been bringing my wife the kid's shoes, doesn't chew them, just brings them to my wife.
At which point should I have his temperment evaluated for working type activites such as SCH. ? And what exactly is involved in something like that? I am interested in SCH but am very new to it.
Tried some very basic tracking last night also, put him in the house and took my 5 yr old through the woods a short way and told her to wait quietly. I brought him outside and told him to go find Marla. He looked a bit confused at first but caught on quickly, he found her trail and stayed with it until he found her.

Without any basic tracking training the dog did that you may have a very smart puppy on your hands. Thats Great!!! I wonder what kind of prior training does he have. Does he sit, down and come on command? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />
I'd buy the Ob Tape/DVD from Ed they are excellent learning tools and the basic tracking tape. Usually it takes some pre-training for a dog to start finding people in the woods.
