Even a well cared for, expierienced brood bitch would be retired at this age. Give her a break and cut your losses. If she had that hard of a life, it's time she got to enjoy the rest of it. As per VC, find her a nice pet home. Leave breeding to the experts.
Thank you, this is the information I was looking for. I realize some of my wording could lead some one to believe that I am a irresponsible breeder. That is not the case and I apologize for confusing anyone. I do try to supplement my dog's diet with raw ingredients, usually road kill deer. Unfortunately, this is not an easy source of meat and I cannot afford to buy meat, so the majority of the time I use Eukanuba. I will look into these other brands you recommend. I have also heard that you can buy frozen bags of beef by-product for realatively cheap and I am looking into this. The puppies looked perfect and I know they were moving the day before delivery so, I assume the small litter thing may be the case.
Mr. Rambeau,
This breed of dog has a lifespan of 15 years or more. It is a fact that dogs remain fertile almost until they die. I do not recommend breeding dogs at this age but, this is an unusual situation as this female is one of, if not the only, surviving daughters of the most famous hound in the history of my style of competition, House's Lipper. It is important that I make every effort to continue this line.
As far as the money goes, every breeder sells some of their pups. Some people try to make a living from these sales. I do not. I do not sell puppies to cover my expenses, I sell them to help cover the expenses. Does Leerburg Kennels give their puppies away? If they do, I want one. I'm sure a Leerburg dog would be more of an effective guardian than my Mal.
If I end up with two healthy puppies, I will be very happy and keep them both. If I end up with six or more healthy puppies, I will keep two and sell the remainder to others who are active in my type of sport. Either way, my main concern is the responsible and selective breeding of this breed for functional purposes. So far, my success has been very good, my dogs are some of the best bred dogs in the country. You will see the bloodlines my dogs carry in the pedigrees of all the national champions.
Thank you for everyone's advice. I will let you know how things turn out.
