Currenlty looking for a GSD puppy, and I run across many site's planned litters. Unfortunately, I don't understand some of the things that are said on the site. For example...
Linebreeding on the litter - Dog Name(3-5) and Other Dog Name (5-4,5).
Linebreeding on the litter - Dog Name(3-5) and Other Dog Name (5-4,5).
This is linebreeding - "Dog name" (3-5) means the same dog is in Dog Name's sire's 3rd generation, and in his mother's 5th generation.
"Other Dog Name" (5-4,5) means the same dog is in "Other Dog Name's" sire's 5th generation on HIS sire's side, and 4th generation on HIS dam's side, and also in the 5th generation on "Other Dog Name's" dam's side. (same dog appears 3 times in Other Dog Name's pedigree, twice on the sire's side and once on the dam's side).
Inbreeding would be if the same dog is listed within the first two generations in the pedigree. Line-breeding is the same dog 2nd generation and/or beyond.
Holy crap! I kinda understand .
It's not that I'm not willing to learn what I need to purchase a puppy, but is this something that I should spend a lot of time learning, and NEED to know to make a informed purchase?
Does this information tell me anything if I don't know anything about the specific dog's in that line? In other words...is this something useful to a newbie like me? -shrug-
If you don't know anything about the dogs in the breeding then it does not tell you much.
If I was looking at a dog linebred on particular dog(s) I would be finding out everything I could about those dog(s), the parents, etc. just as I would if the dog were a total outcross (no linebreeding) Because the same dog is used several times in the pedigree (the linebreeding) it will have a larger genetic contribution than other dogs in the pedigree.
Ask the breeder then ask other people; do research BEFORE you get the dog not after so you understand what the breeding objectives were. --
Find a breeder who is highly recommended and you can trust and have them explain to you why they did that particular breeding. They will know more than you, certainly, but it pays to be an informed consumer, else you may wind up with a dog that is exactly what the breeder intended but not what you wanted.
