Joy ,
In regard to the cross alert on Explosive;
It is possible, just as a bomb dog should alert on ammunition.
I don't these dogs should be used if there is a known threat, or suspicion of a explosive device.
The people I spoke to did not want the the responsibility of giving the all clear in the case of a bomb threat. They were using the dogs as a highly visable way to deter weapons being brought in.
A little off subject but, when a bomb tech came to discuss suspicious packages with a Bomb dog class...the handlers had many concerns about what to do if they got "Interest" in a bag.
His suggestion was to walk the bag over to a x-ray machine and have a look lol.
As far as proofing, I guess it would be the same as any other type of scent work.
Jack,
That was exactly my concern, getting a cross alert if the dog is trained on gun powder. I sure don't think I want an active alert dog doing that . . . :O
Joy,
As I mentioned, the only time I have heard of dogs trained to find firearms, is in the private sector. I think it is an chance for some one to make a couple of bucks and for school systems to send a message, without involving law enforcement. I would set up some tests to see exactly how effective the training was, before I could recommend it.

That leads to another question: are any orgs certifying non LE dogs in firearms?
I am of the understanding that firearms detection dogs are trained to pick up nitrates. It will not matter how well the firearm is cleaned. I think oil discrimination would be more difficult in that there are so many different types and mfg's.
There are some private security firms that will certify, K9 Intercept in Florida comes to mind.
