Hey everyone. Man Ive been off the board for a couple of weeks. Having problems logging in.
Anyways... I have noticed that when I rufle up Kanes fur His undercoat looks like it has a red tint to it. He is mostly black and he eats Canidae dog food. I dont feed him anything red so I was just wondering what everyones oppinion is on it. I have heard of feeding some dogs certain foods that are red to bring out the rednes in the dogs coat but he doesnt eat anything red.
My friend that own few GSDs also has a Maltese with him....after he swtiched to Canidae, he find that his maltese coat, especially the paws, surrounding eyes area turn to reddish...
i have the same problem when i was on Canidae, my golden retriever have the same problem......so i swtiched them back on Back to Basics (only when raw/barf out of supply or no time)the reddish is just gone with the wind.
Wow thanks for the ideas. My dirt isnt red but maybe it is a Canidae thing. It doesnt really bother me but I was kind of stumped on the issue. I wonder why Canidae makes the coat turn red?
again, it is not the beet pulp I tell you! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />
Beet pulp is WHITE in color- from WHITE sugar beets. Those who have fed beet pulp to a horse can back me up on this. I have only seen a few tons of the crap in my lifetime..
IT IS NOT RED!!!! LOL
The maltese with discoloration is actually a oxidation of water that is absorbed into the coat. Essentially RUST. That is why so many small light dogs have tear stains, reddish underbellies, feet etc. Poodle people go to GREAT lengths to keep these areas DRY so that they do not end up with the rust coloring. I have a friend with a white standard who hardly ever touches dirt- much less is allowed on wet grass...
So, again, it ain't the beet pulp, but it is something that is lacking in the feeding program. Go raw!
