The editing on this DVD was finished by Ed Frawley on January 14th, 2011. It is 2 hours and 50 minutes long. The DVD opens with an excellent lecture on the concept and training steps for the send away by Michael Ellis. This lecture was filmed at Michael's school on advanced obedience in California. There is a chapter on working with puppies and a chapter on when to use touch pads vs a toy. There will also be a chapter on training the whistle back (for the ring sports). There is an excellent section on retraining a schutzhund dog to Michael's system of training the send away and an excellent chapter in which Michael reviews his system. I enjoyed the production of this training DVD because I learned a lot along the way. Some trainers will think "How much can there be to training this exercise?" Well, let me tell you that Michael has included many, many training steps that cover different types of dogs. He discusses how you approach the training for the high drive dogs and he explains what trainers need to change in their training program to accommodate lower drive dogs. The beauty of this training DVD is that it has something for the advanced trainer and as well as a step by step program that new trainers can follow. The DVD contains information to help AKC trainers, Schutzhund trainers and Ring Sport Trainers. Some of the chapters segments in the DVD are: Michael's Opening Lecture Getting Started Ball Rewards vs Touch Pads Training your the Puppy Send Away Whistle Backs Retraining older Dogs whose foundation was in a different systems Touch Pads (This 17 minute segment is the same training segment that was used in our Jump DVD) Michael's SEND AWAY Review The training concepts in this DVD follow Michael Ellis' training system which has it's foundation in operant conditioning. If you are not familiar with marker training or if your dog has not gone through the foundation for Michael's training system, you should run your dog through the work, which is the first two DVDs Ed Frawley produced with Michael Ellis: The Power of Training Dogs with Food The Power of Playing Tug with Your Dog In the early 1990's Ed Frawley produced his first training video on the Send Away. That DVD was sold through 2010 until Ed Frawley chose to discontinue selling it. The old video dealt exclusivly with a Schtuzhund Send Away and the methods were old school. This new DVD is based on marker training which is operant conditioning. Some people use clickers in their training, we use a work (YES) to tell a dog he is doing something we like. If you are new to marker training we recommend that you read the free 85 page eBook Ed Frawley wrote titled The Power of Training Dogs with Markers.

I feel the title is misleading - it should be an intro to touch pads. There's some very good detail on a lot of parts of a whole - I hope there is a follow up since there is a lot of info between info missing - even broken down into, as the dvd says - there could be a whole course on whistle backs. That i'd give 5 stars all day long

I felt this video was very good. Micheal Ellis explains key concepts on how to train the send away using positive methods. He also explains when it may be appropriate to introduce some pressure in the work and how improperly doing so can lead to significant problems down the road. ME points problems to avoid and ways to avoid them.

With this information, I have begun patterning the send away and conditioning my young pup to the commands I have chosen to use. My pup is a med drive dog, and is consitently and eagerly doing 20ft send aways in my garage and backyard. Although I may have to change the techniques down the road as the distance increases, ME speaks to how to address this concern extensively in the video.

This exercise has become one of my favorite to work. Thank you, Michael!
