Q. We have a litter of 12 pups one has a cleft pallet. Our vet recommends tube feeding. What do you think?
We just had a litter of 12 labs and have been looking up on the Internet about feeding one of them specifically. We came across your article and thought you might have some input.

One of the puppies was born w/a cleft palate. The veterinarian suggested tube feeding - 1 ml every three hours. Another veterinarian suggested that might not be enough - we called because we felt she wasn't gaining any weight and was even more listless than when she was born. We do not have a scale to weigh her, but estimated her weight at 4 oz - might be even smaller. We have upped the amount to 1 oz daily or 1-1/4 ml every two hours.

Do you have any suggestions or input?

Anything you can give us would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Melinda

A. Put this dog to sleep. In my opinion your vet did you a dis-service in recommending that you try and save this dog.

Feeding tube is 16 inches long (41cm) and approximately 3/32 inches (2.7mm) outside diameter. It is best to store your feeding tube and syringe at normal room temperature. In colder temperatures the feeding tube will become rigid and stiff. At body temperature, the tube becomes softer, resilient, and completely flexible. Syringe is 35cc and attaches to the integral funnel end of the feeding tube. The opposite end of the feeding tube has a closed rounded tip with 2 side port 'eyes'.

I have been doing artificial inseminations on my own dogs since the late 1980s, I don't know how many times I have done an AI but certainly between 250 to 300 times. I currently have a success rate of well over 90%. Our 1 hour DVD shows how we collect a stud dog an immediately inseminate one of our females at our kennel.
